“I think the positive energy surrounding us is partly why Max’s treatment has been so successful so far,” Young said.

Max’s story is featured in the San Diego Union Tribune this morning. Read the full article by clicking here.
“An enormous grin spread over Max’s face when he saw his friends. Max recently finished two months of radiation treatments and is still undergoing chemotherapy, but he seemed to get a burst of energy from the gathering. He and a group of rowdy boys raced around the hay bales and flung loose hay from the ground at one other.”

On the two weekends preceding Halloween, from Oct 17th - Oct. 26th, neighbors in Cardiff-by-the-Sea, California will light up their houses and front yards with harvest and happy Halloween decorations. On each of those weekend nights, from 6-9 pm, neighbors will illuminate their yards to show their support for four-year-old Max Kleckner who is in the fight of his life battling life-threatening cancer. To prepare for the event, some friends and neighbors will gather on Oct. 16 and 17th to carve pumpkins and finalize decorations, and a local restaurant, East Coast Pizza, is donating a percentage of sales on Friday the 17th and Saturday the 18th to Max.
On July 4th, 2008, Max was diagnosed with stage 4 Rhabdomyosarcoma, a cancer detected in approximately 300 children in the United States each year. After initial chemotherapy at Children’s Hospital in San Diego, Max, along with his parents Mark and Natalie, flew to Houston, Texas in order to receive proton radiation therapy for 8 weeks. Three weeks into radiation therapy and living in Houston, hurricane Ike suspended the proton radiation therapy, and caused the Kleckner family to evacuate from Houston to Corpus Christi. Even before the hurricane, Max’s mom, Natalie commented, “I think he knows much more than we think he does. So, we carry on as bravely and positively as we can, to keep him going…”.
The Kleckner family returned to Cardiff on Oct. 10 to find gold ribbons tied around trees, utility poles, gates and fences, in a show of unity and support for their cause. Now, on Oct. 17th, Max will be able to walk down the streets of Cardiff, and see that neighbors have decorated their yards with a happy Halloween and harvest time theme, with him in their thoughts. The decorations will create an atmosphere similar to that of a “Candy Cane Lane” during the December holidays, and will be an exciting sight for all eyes. In bringing folks from throughout San Diego to view the festive neighborhood of Cardiff, Max’s supporters hope to bring attention to the Kleckner’s need for donations to help them in their struggle to save Max’s life.

The entire neighborhood is buzzing with the news. Max and his family are back home in Cardiff after two months of intense treatment in Texas. We are all looking forward to seeing their smiling faces around town.
We are so thrilled to be coming home. Mark and I are both emotionally and physically drained and ready for a big dose of Cardiff and our friends and family. Max has exceeded all of the doctor’s expectations and is not exhibiting any of the serious early side effects from radiation or chemo. This renews our hope and confidence that he will overcome and conquer both the disease and the long term damage from radiation.

Tags:Del Mar, Fundraiser, Volleyball.

September 6th was the first fundraising event to support Max in his fight against cancer. An all day volleyball tournament was held at 21st Street in Del Mar with over 60 people participating in the fun and charity. The money raised went to offset Max’s medical bills. While this is a big help for the Kleckners, it barely dents the magnitude of the costs they are facing, so we need to continue as a village in our support of our favorite superhero!
